It has a good defensive typing and ability, allowing it opportunities to switch in and gain momentum against Pokemon like Landorus-T and Heatran. Volt Switch lets Rotom-W safely pivot into the aforementioned wallbreakers despite their frailty. This pairs well with Hydro Pump, threatening Ground-types such as Landorus-T and Gliscor. Trick allows Rotom-W to cripple Pokemon like Ferrothorn and Toxapex as well as Pokemon used on stall teams like Blissey and Clodsire while also freeing up the move lock on Choice Scarf, allowing for it to ease prediction against Electric-type immune Pokemon. Thunder Wave pairs well with Choice Scarf, as it allows Rotom-W to slow down imposing wallbreakers and setup sweepers that are otherwise faster than it such as Tapu Lele, Gouging Fire, and Zamazenta. Will-O-Wisp lets Rotom-W immediately threaten physical attackers such as Dragonite and Mega Scizor, making them unable to snowball out of control. However, this does come at the cost of not being able to cripple Gouging Fire and Volcarona. Pain Split gives Rotom-W a limited form of recovery after using Trick, allowing it to stay in a game much longer and check Gliscor and Heatran more consistently. The EVs allow Rotom-W to outspeed Adamant Gouging Fire at +1. Tera Ghost allows it to check dangerous wincons like Ursaluna and Swords Dance Gliscor much better while also granting it a Fighting immunity against the likes of Zamazenta.
